What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India. 

This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India. Aadhaar letter received via India Post and e-Aadhaar downloaded from UIDAI website are equally valid.
  • Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enroll for Aadhaar.
  • Each individual needs to enroll only once which is free of cost.
  • Each Aadhaar number will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for life.
  • Aadhaar number will help you provide access to services like banking, mobile phone connections and other Govt and Non-Govt services in due course.
Benefits of Aadhaar

Aadhaar means foundation and, therefore it is the base on which any delivery system can be built. Aadhaar can be used in any system which needs to establish the identity of a resident and/or provide secure access for the resident to services/benefits offered by the system. Aadhaar can be used in the delivery of the following programs:

Food & Nutrition
Public Distribution System, Food Security, Mid-Day Meals, Integrated Child Development Scheme.
 
Employment
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana, Indira Awaaz Yojana, Prime Minister’s Employment Guarantee Program

How to get Aadhaar?
You can enroll for an Aadhaar at any of the Enrollment Centers in your state. These centers are run by UIDAI appointed Registrars. In order to get an Aadhaar you will be required to visit an Enrollment Centre, fill and submit the enrollment form (which asks for basic information like age, gender, date of birth, address) and get your Biometric data (fingerprints + iris image) captured. Aadhaar enrollment is free.However, any update in details will attract a nominal fee prescribed by UIDAI.
